Director of IFAR LPEM UI

The Indonesian Scholarship and Research Support Foundation (ISRSF) is a non-profit organization that offers scholarships to Indonesian students for postgraduate/doctoral studies and supports research in the social sciences in Indonesia in collaboration with national universities. ISRSF has established a consortium of Institutes for Advanced Research (IFARs) at partner universities to create environments conducive to original research, especially in the social sciences, economics and policy studies. 
 
ISRSF and the Lembaga Penyelidikan Ekonomi dan Masyarakat (LPEM) have established a new IFAR at the University of Indonesia, the fourth member of the IFAR Consortium. IFAR-LPEM will provide research fellowships to young scholars with exceptional potential, including former recipients of Arryman Scholarships awarded by ISRSF. These fellows will also have opportunities to participate in LPEM research and in some cases to offer courses in the Faculty of Economics of the University of Indonesia. 
 
ISRSF seeks to recruit a part-time Director of IFAR-LPEM to provide intellectual and managerial leadership during the start-up phase of the new institute. The director will participate in selecting, mentoring and evaluating IFAR-LPEM fellows, with the goal of helping them publish their research internationally. 
 

Main Tasks of the IFAR Director: 

The main task of the Director will be to create a scholarly ecosystem at IFAR-LPEM that is conducive to original research in the social sciences, economics and policy studies. Specifically, he or she will: 
 

  • Organize the hiring process for new IFAR-LPEM fellows; 
  • Establish performance indicators for each fellow and monitor progress toward achieving these goals; 
  • Based on these performance indicators, manage the processes of continuation, promotion and termination of research fellowships; 
  • Collaborate with the IFAR Consortium to organize workshops, conferences, symposia, seminars and training programs for research fellows; 
  • Ensure effective collaboration between the IFAR Consortium and LPEM, and other University of Indonesia bodies; 
  • Liaise with international partners, including Northwestern University, SOAS University of London, and others; 

Conditions of Employment:

As with similar director positions for institutes and programs at major universities, appointments are for one year, renewable annually. After the third year, appointments of 3-5 years are possible. This position is part-time with an expected commitment of no more than 20% of the candidate’s working time. 
 
As this is a part-time position, the Director will not be required to be resident in Jakarta. However, it is expected that the Director will travel to the Institute at least three times per year. ISRSF will cover the cost of travel to Jakarta, accommodations and insurance if the successful applicant is not resident in Jakarta. 
 
Salary and benefits will be based on the seniority and qualifications of the selected applicant. 
 

Expectations and Performance:

The Director of IFAR UI is expected to focus on the following items in the first year: 
 

  • Execute annual postdoc hiring round 
  • Prepare annual IFAR grant proposal to ISRSF 
  • Explore linkages among IFAR postdocs and researchers 
  • Establish performance standards for IFAR postdoc(s) and guide transition after graduation 
  • Evaluate IFAR staff performance 
  • Develop and pursue an agenda for IFAR UI academic activities 
  • Develop effective publication schedules and strategies for IFAR researchers 
  • Develop relationships with LPEM, Buffett/Qatar/SOAS, and IFAR Consortium members 

Qualifications:

ISRSF is seeking a senior scholar to provide intellectual and organization leadership for the new Institute, creating an environment conducive to world-class research. We are seeking an established scholar with a track record of original research, publications and teaching at the undergraduate and/or postgraduate level. Qualifications include: 
 

  • A doctoral degree in the social sciences, economics or policy studies; 
  • Evidence of publications in peer-reviewed journals and/or established university presses; 
  • Teaching experience at the undergraduate and/or postgraduate level; 
  • Evidence of managerial capacity in an academic setting.
